BRAN or NO BRAN? - TIPS from THE TONGUE

THEY SAY - "Bran is good for my horses diet"

WE SAY - "Calcium should not be lower than phosphorous in any horses diet but the calcium level in bran is 10 times and even up to 15 times lower than phosphorous, work it out"

THEY SAY - "A bran mash once a week loosens my horse up nicely and gives it a good stomach flush"

WE SAY - "Slight bowel irritation and digestive disorders can be bought on quickly by random changes in the diet, hence the mushy poop"

THEY SAY - "Foals love a bran mash and its so easy for them to eat"

WE SAY - "Mix egg and/or alfalfa with the bran to increase calcium if you really must, but be aware that a foal will draw CALCIUM from its skeleton to help satisfy some if its calcium needs if necessary

THEY SAY - "The bran conditions horses really well"

WE SAY - "Bran contains phytic acid, an antinutrient known to prevent nutrient absorption and lets not even mention its possible connection to Equine Enteroliths

THEY SAY - "Bran is a great source of fiber for my horse"

WE SAY - "Bran has a fiber content of less than 14%"

SO THEN ASK! - "Should you feed bran at all"

AND WE WILL ANSWER - "Sure, it would be safe to suggest no more than 10% maximum of your hard feed and that is providing your horse is healthy to start with !!!"
